The Great Movie Ride originated from the idea for the Great Movie Moments at the Movie Pavilion at Epcot. The ride takes guests through scenes from famous movies. The entrance to the ride is themed to look like Grauman's Chinese Theater in California[1][2].

Ride Queue

The ride queue goes through a lobby themed like Grauman's Chinese Theater costumes, props and set pieces in displays around the queue. These props currently include a horse from the Merry-go-round in Marry Poppins, outfits from The Chronicles of Narnia and a dress from Shakespeare in Love. Some props that have been removed include props from Indiana Jones, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Alien, Sound of Music, Cocoon, Sam's piano from Casablanca, the holo-chess bard from Star Wars, and the Ruby Slippers from The Wizard of Oz.

Once through this part of the queue, guests go into a large theater also themed like the one inside Grauman's which shows a looped reel of movie trailers through time. It has occasionally been updated. In early 2007 the film broke and an older version was shown while the other one was being repaired.

Ride Details

Guests ride in theater style seats through multiple scenes from films

Scenes

  1. Hollywood Hills including the old Hollywoodland
  2. Cake from the musical Footlight Parade
  3. Gene Kelly singing at the lamp post from Singin' in the Rain
  4. Chimney sweeps from Mary Poppins singing on the London rooftops
  5. Gangster movies - an audio-animatronic James Cagney from The Public Enemy. It is also where a live gangster, named Bugsy (a male of female) has a gun fight over the riders. Sometimes Bugsy hijacks the ride vehicle.
  6. Western movies with an audio-animatronics John Wayne on a horse who talks to the guests and Clint Eastwood near a saloon. The ride is stopped and a bank robbery happens in front of the guests. Sometimes one of the robbers hijacks the ride.
  7. Nostromo, the ship from Alien
  8. Temple filled with snakes similar to Raiders of the Lost Ark but not officially. Here there is a cloaked guard guarding a large jewel. The gangster or bank robber then attempts to steal it. The guard warns against it but they go ahead and attempt the theft. The hijacker dissapears into smoke and their skeleton is left behind. The guard pulls back their cloak and it's the original guide.
  9. Horror movies
  10. A Jungle which includes Tarzan swinging on a vine and Jane sitting on an elephant
  11. Casablanca with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in front of an airplane
  12. Projections from The Sorcerer's Apprentice
  13. Munchkinland from The Wizard of Oz where Dorothy's house has crushed the witch. Audio-animatronic Munchkins begin to appear and sing to the guests. Next the Wicked Witch of the West appears.
  14. Theater showing scenes from over 80 famous movies and films.

Edit

Changes

When the ride originally opened, there was a scene called the 'Footlight Parade' which was changed due to mechanical issues with the scene.

Edit

Rumored Changes

Currently, there are rumors that the Alien scene in the ride is going to be replaced by a scene from Pirates of the Caribbean

Edit

Unbuilt Versions

Some original plans had a Muppet influence on the ride. Unfortunately with Jim Henson's passing, the relationship with his family and Disney soured ending the potential ride influence[3].

Another plan was to have guests put on 3D glasses during a scene where villains from Disney cartoons would attack the riders[4].
